Yr 11 Media Representations

October 8, 2008

Representations of Men and Women in the Media

Why are representations of men and women in the media so limited? What effect might this have?

Pique Curiosity

Youtube – “the celluloid closet” clips (representations of gay and lesbians in cinema over the 20th C)

Youtube – Killing Us Softly (Destructive Representations of Women in Advertising)

Issues – Bubble us
And
Big Questions

How are representations constructed – camera, sound, acting, lighting, plot, character?
How do representations reflect the society that made them ( the social values of that time and place)
Why are representations in the mass media so stereotypical?
What might be the effect or influence on audiences of stereotypical representations?

Effort- the webquest

Find out how women and men have been represented in the each decade of the 20th Century.

Understand why women and men may have been represented in these ways?

Guess at the effect these representations might have on audiences?

•    Collect / Crowdsource information (clipmarks)
•    Sift into relevance and questions (diigo)
•    Test understandings with peers, local and online networks (online discussion)
•    Begin to formulate the shape of the Group Synthesis (bubble us again??)

Serve the Net

Construct a video representation of young men which challenges today’s stereotypes and post it on YouTube for comment and feedback.

Construct a photographic representation of young women which challenges today’s stereotypes and post it on Flicker for comment and feedback.

The Almost Invisible Earbud

Instead of cords, these earbuds are on a wavy, bendable soft wire band that wraps behind your head. And in the center is–get this–a place for an iPod Shuffle. It snaps right on there, adding (oooh!) a whole half an ounce to the headband.

Quote from CNET review
“one of the best (and most liberating) solutions to listening to music while you work out … thanks to an integrated iPod Shuffle dock in the rear; fit securely on your ears, making them well-suited for sporting activities; stealthy design–they don’t make you look like a dork”.

New game gizmo uses mind control

An Australian company is gearing up to release a computer headset that allows people to control video games using only the power of their minds.

The Emotiv EPOCTM. Supplied by Emotiv Systems Photographer

Featuring 16 sensors that measure electrical impulses from the brain, the headset – which plugs into the PC’s USB port – will enable games to register facial expressions, emotions and even cognitive thoughts, allowing players to perform in-game actions just by visualising them.

The headset could also detect the players’ emotions – whether they’re bored, angry, engaged, happy, stressed, etc – and adjust difficulty levels, in-game music and the game environment accordingly.

oh no it’s Danni again… :-)

I thought just in case somebody would actually like to see the college side we have been talking about- its lms.tradespace.com.au- you can look at the home page but you need username etc to look at courses. Email me if you want to see particular things and I’ll see what I can do. :-)

Term 3

October 8, 2008

During term 3 I tried Dipity with a group of year 7 students. They enjoyed using it although it was spoilt by massive neetwork connectivity problems.

On a slightly more interesting note I finally managed to trial the blog I created for year 8 geography. Once I learnt to cope with a less than satisfactory network and save the site as a PDF for backup purposes I managed to progress. It was interesting to note the range of experience the year 8’s had with blogs- most had very limited experience.

The biggest problem was accessing edublogs http://mrsbutler1.edublogs.org/

It seemed to be off-line more often than not.

Benefits of the blog was the ability to provide an overview, immediacy of adding links for students, the modeling of web 2.0 tools, evaluations of websites and the conventions of using blogs.

Tracking evaluations from students was managed via a tracking log.

It is yet to have its post assignment evaluation with Geography staff and students where I will fine tune it.

Danni remembers some more…

October 8, 2008

Actually as Tom just mentioned Flickr I remembered that I have also been working on putting photos of camps, projects etc on our home page using Flickr  :-) . Also been doing a lot of thinking about how I can integrate IT things more into teaching- as I don’t actually teach a subject I find it a bit of a struggle to entice teachers at times to include IT stuff…. espeacilly as we are using a personal learning approach (students learn at their own pace, using teachers as facilitators only) so there isn’t really any ‘whole group’ teaching in the VCAL classes. I’ve also found that many students still prefer actual hand outs to instructions posted on our college learning management system site, and they simply love handing in real bits of paper! So, a lot of thinking and evaluation…. :-)

What we’ve been up to

October 8, 2008

Facebook Group for the Scotch College Military Band – marching formation videos and tunes, photos of camps and other activities, online discussions about “packing for camp” etc.

Wikispaces – a MyFuture wiki for group work doing pre-production for a career video documentary project – collaborative writing of treatments, audience and purpose statements, the script (all trackable down to the comma, using the wiki page HISTORY function)

Web 2.0 Workshops for general staff – we made wordpress blogs together – inserting youtube videos, links to online articles, images etc.

Our Library now has a blog. Our Chaplain now has a blog. Continued developing my blog for media studies teachers and students

Andrew’s update

October 8, 2008

“>Since our last session I trialled dipity with my Year 10 Geography class.
We were looking at the history of Australian tourism. The students really enjoyed it, especially the fact the timeline was growing before their very eyes. Within half an hour we had a decent timeline.

As a result of this ’success’ I ran a session on how to use dipity with my Geography colleagues. My Year 8 Geography classes have continued to use the Antarctica blog created by Michelle. It was an excellent central port of call for their research assignment.

What Matt and Danni been doin……:-)

October 8, 2008

Matt and Danni have been working really hard on various tasks around the Australian Technical College.

Matt has been busy developing a program called ‘Mocha’ which is a student and employer management system/ pastoral care/ time tabling…….system- basically whatever is needed. So you can imagine the magnitude of that task – it’s been occupying Matt’s mind even in his deepest sleep. On top of that (humanly almost impossible) he has been researching and evaluating a variety of learning software programs.

Danni has continued to find resources for teachers and students, as well as supporting students with special needs, as well as trying out links to programs which have been posted by you and seeing where they might fit. She’s also been developing content to put on students’ phones for their info- last items were Occupational Health and Safety Video, Maths time tables and a blood donation brochure.

Basically, those two have been too damn busy to go exploring too much- hence it’s good to be back here! J
